A classic longboard at its finest

ThisAdrokultura noserider is a classic longboard inspired by David Nuuhiwa’s model shaped by the late Donald Takayama (1942-2012). According to Adrian, this 60’s noserider is the pinnacle of noseriders and therefore, he pays his very own tribute baptizing it as “David’s”.

The inspiration

A big chunk of inspiration came via David’s and Donald’s original shape but Adrian has adapted the surfboard to his likes. The classic feeling can be felt when grabbing the noserider under the arm, but his refined and modernised longboard differentiates itself from others in the outline and its proportions. I dont like a longboard to be too wide on the nose, so I shaped the longboard to be symmetrical from nose to tail says Adrian.

From start to finish

Adrian not only shapes his boards but he also glasses and sands them from startto finish. These longboards have a 6oz fiber glasslayer in the bottom and two 6oz layers on top (6oz+6oz). A lighter yet strong glass job to keep a great weight considering this board is shaped with a “T Band” stringer (double stringer) that naturally adds weight to the noserider.

A gem for noseride lovers

This model is really fun for anyoneloving to noserideand longboarding as Adrian kept the design a little less flat than the conventional longboards. What for? Well no one likes to nose dive so he decided to add curve and rocker to the nose to make it easier to get into the wave. Also, the concave he used for the nose on the bottom side of the board is not the classic nose concave, known also as tear drop concave. He decided to go for a more blended and fluid type of curve instead making it an easy one to surf with lots of volumen up in the nose. The board is flat in the centre and melts into a slight rocker in the tail and nose.

Comparing the Davids Noserider to his very own Bob’s Noserider (named after Bob McTavish), this one has a lot more volume and thickness. Nevertheless, to balance the board and keep it drivey he made the rails pinchier and sharper so it wouldnt be difficult to pivot the board from rail to rail.

Who is David Nuuhiwa?

A hawaiian born surfer that always stud out for his smooth surfing style and his jaw dropping nose riding abilities. From the very beginning he was considered a competitive surfer. And not any competitive surfer he was one of the finest surfers of the 60s and one of those who had no problem transitioning from longboard to shortboard in the 70s.

Living in Hermosa Beach he always spent a lot of time with Grant Reynolds, Iggy and Donald Takayama. The last of these three, one of his biggest influences since he was a kid. It was David and Donald’s friendship that ended up creating the Donald Takayama Noserider, considered one of the best longboard shapes ever by many great surfers.

As mentioned previously, he shaped his first board in 2012 for a friend. It was a Mini Simmons and since then, he has done quite some boards bit without any continuity or compromiseto the job in a long term.

It was not until November 2019 that he decided to dedicate himself to shaping surfboards.Since the last ones he made were getting better and better, people and friends who tried them were happy and enjoyed them… Things were working quite well so he decided to giveshaping surfboards a real chance.

“I like to make boards that motivate me to surf, that can work on the beach where you surf or on the waves that are close to home. I’m lucky that I’ve been surfing all my life which also makes me meet a lot of people. Those people are motivated by the fact that you make their surfboards, and feel even more motivated to surf them if they know that have been shaped by you, a friend as well. That’s what keeps my fire goingwhen it comes to shapingsurfboards, while learning and improving in the process.”Adrian Lopez.
